“True beauty comes from the inside out...” ~Quote from multiple people
Channels that often affect facial appearance, in TCM, are typically linked to organs along the gastrointestinal tract. Channels of these organs travel to the face. When the channels are in balance, our skin is supple. When an imbalance arises, such as heat being accumulated in one of these channels, we'll start to see signs of aging. Aging is of course normal, natural, no one can escape and is triggered by stress. These stress resulting in negative emotions, which could lead to bad dietary habits, can cause heat to accumulate.
What acupuncture does is release heat through points that emerge on the face. Another explanation explains how acupuncture works by causing micro-injuries to the dermis layer. The brain receives this signal and sends collagen and elastin forming fibroblast cells to the perceived injured site for healing.
Some facial treatments needle specific points such as the Cosmetic Acupuncture Facelift, Neck/Jowl Lift, and Abdominal Protocol. Whereas, other face care treatments will thread through wrinkles. Regardless of the method used, body points and face points will be put in place using very fine needles.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE ABOUT COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE:
Acupuncture for anti-aging and face care explains the appearance of age in TCM terms as qi and blood exhaustion. By so doing, a TCM diagnosis is made so that an herbal formula or tea may be paired with the acupuncture treatment. The underlying concept is to replenish the body. A quick facial is often added before needles are in place with this anti-aging face care. Facial steps involve moistening the face, applying a light layer of lotion made from botanical origins and a facial massage. Facial acupuncture needles are then used. Needles are only inserted into the living. dermis part of the skin. However, a risk to note is that there is also a risk for bruising and hematomas with this method.

Explained according to a western biomedicine point of view, needling and herbals promote collagen and elastin production on the face by increasing muscle tone and elasticity. Stimulation of cells lays down new collagen fibers under wrinkles, filing them up, to remove wrinkles and sagging. This therapy also removes toxins and encourages cell reproduction. This therapy allows beauty to be achieved from the interior to the exterior. Considered a holistic approach, beauty is derived from the interior.
Like all acupuncture treatments, there will be forms to review on the first visit. A general TCM diagnosis will be done. This simply includes answering some questions plus a tongue and pulse diagnosis. Initial visits are typically a little bit longer. They can range anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. The time for each subsequent visit will depend on how many facial needles are used. A course of 10 treatments is recommended for both methods. Scheduling follow-ups to maintain results after the first ten visits is also common.
Cosmetic Acupuncture and acupuncture for face care can both be viewed as a safe and natural alternative to botox and surgical procedures. Plastic surgery causes scars. In TCM, scars can block channels hindering a smooth flow within the channels.
